You are responsible for

  • Resolution and troubleshooting of magnet structural and mechanical issues that arise at the Suzhou production facility.
  • Understanding and interpreting magnet design drawings, tolerancing and assembly features which are critical to quality and safety.
  • Reviewing and resolving non-conforming material reports (NCMRs) from the factory and vendor supplied materials.
  • Reviewing and ensuring adequacy of vendor qualification activities to ensure compliance with applicable industry standards.
  • Understanding effects of part and assembly variation on magnet thermal and magnetic performance and reliability.
  • General activities such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), tolerance analyses and corrective action preventative action (CAPA) activities and procedures.
  • Actively participating in multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Working with the Procurement Engineering team for supply localization and cost reduction.

You are a part of

A global R&D team with diverse backgrounds and expertise.  The Suzhou based team works in close collaboration with Development Engineering in Latham, NY as well as Project Management, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Service, and Quality team members throughout the product lifecycle. 

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience


  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (M.S. preferred) followed by 10+ years of practical experience applying mechanical engineering principles.

Required Skills:

  • Experience with structural/mechanical aspects and manufacturing of cryogenic components, preferably superconducting magnets including coil support structure magnetic and thermal loading and stresses.
  • Experience with superconducting magnet suspension systems, cryogenic insulation systems, stainless steel and aluminum castings and fiberglass components.
  • Experience leading small teams
  • Experience with welding of aluminum and stainless steel components and assemblies as well as appropriate fixturing and methods to minimize weld distortion.
  • Experience with brazing and soldering processes for piping and associated leak check procedures.
  • Experience with assembly of complex mechanical assemblies, bolt torqueing procedures, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance stack up analysis, etc.
  • Familiarity with codes and standards applicable to pressure vessels and MRI devices manufactured in China.
  • Ability to make reasonable assumptions to drive progress toward a solution.
  • Ability to travel to other Philips facilities for mentoring and training (US, Europe, etc.).
  • Proficient in English and Chinese languages.  Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with US and European based engineers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • Familiarity with superconducting magnet diagnostics, acceptance testing and problem resolution
  • Familiarity with orbital welding processes
  • Experience with the design and development of gages and measurements systems to demonstrate product dimensional acceptance.
  • Software tools – Autodesk Inventor, ANSYS, Mathcad, Reliasoft Suite, Microsoft Office applications
