You are responsible for

In this role as Cryogenic Design Engineer, you will focus primarily on cryogenic application of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and structural mechanics to support the production and maintenance of superconducting MRI magnets.  Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide guidance and support to Suzhou factory for proper installation of magnet cooling  and refrigeration systems
  • Work closely with Latham engineers to troubleshoot daily cooling and refrigeration system issues that arise on the Suzhou production line
  • Assist Suzhou manufacturing team to improve productivity, quality, safety, etc. as it pertains to installation of cooling and refrigeration systems
  • Assist Latham engineering in thorough documentation of improvements made to productivity, quality, safety, etc. as it pertains to installation and or testing of cooling and refrigeration systems on the Suzhou line.
  • Understanding and interpreting magnet design drawings, tolerancing and assembly features which are critical to quality and safety.
  • Understanding effects of part and assembly variation on magnet thermal and magnetic performance and reliability.
  • General activities such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), tolerance analyses and corrective action preventative action (CAPA) activities and procedures.
  • Actively participating in multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Assist Latham engineering in analysis of field issues related to cryogenic design and providing solutions where required.

You are a part of

A global R&D team with diverse backgrounds and expertise.  The Suzhou based team works in close collaboration with Development Engineering in Latham, NY as well as Project Management, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Service, and Quality team members throughout the product lifecycle.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

Experience/Education:

  • B.S in Thermal Fluids or Mechanical Engineering, M.S. preferred
  • 6+ years of experience applying engineering principles to solve complex problems related to thermal/fluid systems and/or cryogenics.

Required Skills:

  • Experience with thermal/fluid/cryogenic aspects and manufacturing of cryogenic components, preferably superconducting magnets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including fluency in English and Chinese languages.
  • Familiarity with codes and standards applicable to MRI devices manufactured in China.
  • Strong understanding of Mechanical, Thermal, and Fluid systems including basic analytics.
  • Strong understanding of Cryogenic Technologies including vacuum, cryo refrigeration, active shielding, use of multi-layer insulation, use of cryogenic fluids (gaseous or liquid).
  • Strong understanding of materials used at cryogenic temperatures including differences in CTE, heat transfer, strength, behavior, etc. at Elevated temperatures to Room temperature to Cryogenic temperatures.
  • Strong practical problem solving skills.
  • Ability to make reasonable assumptions to drive progress toward a solution.

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • Software tools – Autodesk Inventor, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams
  • Programming – Fortran, C++, Microsoft VBA, Python
  • A basic understanding of the practical application of Mechatronics or controls
  • Experience working with cryogenic systems, cryostats, and/or cryocoolers
  • Solid understanding of cryogenic refrigeration systems using Gifford McMahon, Sterling, and or Pulse Tube 10K/4K coldheads and compressors
  • Hands on experience with service and maintenance of cryogenic systems including Gifford McMahon, Sterling, and or Pulse Tube 10K/4K coldheads and compressors
  • Hands on experience with fabrication methods such as machining, welding, brazing, soldering, forming, etc.
  • Hands on experience performing lab testing and data acquisition
  • Solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5
